Q1 What’s your first impression of Shanghai/China? How do you think of the local environment for doing business? “ Victoria: The enterprise and consumer markets in China are complex. Successful startups need to not only understand them well, but also be agile enough to change when competition swoops in. The local environment encourages this type of rapid growth mindset. Each year I visit China, there seems to be some sort of exponential change whether it’s in its transportation infrastructure, government programs, or consumer businesses. I’m impressed by China’s ambition and adaptability. Jeff: China is continuously evolving in a high speed. I work at IBM in Taiwan before Sloan School of Management and managed to visit Shanghai regularly, and every time I feel impressed about the things happening here, be it the convenience of mobile payment, internet services, or upgraded dining experience. In terms of doing business, there are a lot of great policies, funds and talent pool supporting new ventures, especially in financial, retail, and food industry. Anum:My initial reaction to Shanghai as a city was the pure amount of efficiency. Despite being a population three times that of New York City, there were never long lines to enter a restaurant, the subway, or anywhere else for that matter. The result of this is an environment that allows people to move quickly and efficiently, which in my opinion translated into a positive environment for doing business. When you’re not worried about getting from point A to point B quickly, your brainpower is focused on simply getting work done. ” Q2 Could you give a brief introduction of the project you’re taking part in with Fudan IMBA mates? What’s in it that you think is the most interesting or benefiting? “ Jeff: We are working with Raise3D, a leading 3D printing company, to conduct a US marketing research that enforces the US marketing strategy. I find it interesting because it is the first time I work with a startup in a rather forefront industry, and every day I learn something new about the technology, business environment, and communications. ” Jeff and Daniel are visiting Raise3D’s show room. The red spaceman is 3D-printed “ Ritika: As part of our China lab project, we are working with Fulaan Technology, a service provider for the education industry. Working on the project has been an incredible learning experience in gaining exposure to China’s education market. We received various insights about the product, current functionality and future potential, through talking with local teachers, students and Fulaan employees in the product, marketing, legal and sales departments. David: We are helping Medtronic to explore new partnership to deliver value based healthcare solution in China to diabetes patients. I enjoy being able to take a broad project and have the flexibility to design the team’s path with great autonomy. It has been a wonderful experience designing a plan-of-attack and executing the plan to deliver a successful mid-term presentation. Next, between now and the final presentation, I am thrilled to have the chance to focus on and dive deeper into the areas that the host finds most interesting and meaningful. Anum: I was on the InnoSpace+ team, working on a project aimed at attracting overseas startups into the InnoSpace+ ecosystem. As someone in startups and tech, it was fascinating to get a global perspective on how accelerators are emerging in China, what the perceptions of them are, what the blockers are, what the benefits are, and so on. This global perspective is one that enhances my credibility as I network and speak with investors. ” Q3 What do you think of the Fudan IMBA mates you’re working together with in this project? What have you learnt from each other? “ Victoria: Yan and Zack have been incredible teammates! In our project, they added a lot of value, providing a deeper perspective around the Chinese incubators we’ve researched and identifying key points in the team’s recommendations. I’ve also picked up certain business norms that I would not have known otherwise without Yan and Zack pointing them out to me. Daniel: Shake and Psyche are two extraordinary individuals! As project partners, both of them have been committed and contributed greatly! Before we got to Sanghai, both have done extensive secondary research and were ready to “hit the floor running”. They are like a great bridge between my “rough” western style and the Chinese culture, appreciated me for my differences, and have given thoughtful and insightful feedback. Angele: The Fudan MBA students have been an incredible support to the Fulaan project, especially in helping us navigate the local scene: conducting local interviews, effective communication with the host client and valuable insights in to the Fulaan product. Our Fudan team provided us with interesting insights on the Ed-tech market in China and conducted field work and analysis on the “demand side” focus for the final presentation. ” Students visiting Fulaan Technology. “ Tim: The Fudan students have been incredible. They have been great ambassadors for Chinese culture. They have taken extra time to help us understand the nuances of Chinese business culture. They are incredibly driven and I have been impressed with their ability to conduct business in the language that is not native to them. ” Students on the InnoSpace+ team doing the mid-term report Q4 How’s your project going? What expectations do you have for the final presentation of Fudan-MIT China Lab in May? “ Daniel: There is much to be done, we need to build a concrete framework to do data analysis and to conduct extensive primary research interviews. The time differences as well as the different workloads and school expectations is a barrier, but our team is ready to make it happen! We are happy to have had the opportunity to work closely together and are looking forward to successfully completing our next steps and deliver valuable insights to Raise3D. Ritika: We have made significant progress in our analysis and recommendations so far across the four key areas, addressing the clients’ needs. In the final weeks, we hope to conduct more interviews and research to solidify our findings, establish suitable connections with app developers and other relevant parties to assist Fulaan in executing the plan. We are looking forward to concluding our China Lab experience by adding value to our client and enhance our learning through comprehensive research, analysis and delivery in the final presentation and report. Victoria: I’m proud of how our project is progressing. Our sponsor was very pleased with our midterm presentation and believe we are heading towards the right direction. In May, we want to provide a concrete and clear implementation plan of our recommendations, helping her prioritize her short and long-term next steps. David: The project has been going well. We have delivered a solid mid-term presentation, and I am excited to deliver the final presentation of the Fudan-MIT China Lab project. While there still remains a few tasks and activities to be completed, I am confident that the team will have a final deliverable that is helpful to the host and enlightening to the entire team. ”
